While the Cosmopolitan Soccer league made the difficult decision to cancel their Fall 2020 soccer season due to COVID, the NY Ukrainians entered both their 1st team and Reserve team in the specially created NYC FALL SOCCER CUP. The goal was to provide the players with an opportunity to stay in game shape, keep sharp and play against some quality competition until such time that the league can safely restart it’s outdoor season.
The nine teams entered played in a round robin format with the top 4 teams advancing to the semi-final round, which were played on 11/22/20. Both the 1st team and Reserve team ended up with identical 4 Wins, 2 Tie, 1 Loss records, finishing 3rd and 4th in the standings after round robin play, making it to the semi-finals of the competition.
The Reserve team who finished 4th played their semi-final match first at 12:00pm vs Molamerica, who finished first after the round robin stage with a 6 Win, 1 Tie, 0 Loss record. While the Molamerica team were heavy favorites to win the game, the Ukrainian Reserve team pulled off a big upset and defeated them by a score of 2-1, advancing themselves to the finals.
After this match, with excitement still in the air with the Reserve team victory, the 1st team played their match against Deportivo Sociedad, who finished 2nd with a 4 Win, 2 Tie, 1 Loss record. Once again, it was the Ukrainian squad who pulled off the upset with a similar 2-1 scoreline, eliminating Deportivo Sociedad and making it an all Ukrainian final.
Congratulations to both teams on making it to the final. Good luck.
